The AR15 Pistol is a special variant of the AR15 Carbine.
Federal law requires that a rifle must have a barrel length of at least 16". Any rifle with shorter barrel is defined by law as a short barreled rifle (SBR). In order to legally own a SBR, the owner must apply for a special (and costly) tax.
An AR15 platform can qualify as a pistol, thus avoiding the SBR tax stamp.
In order to qualify as a pistol, it must meet certain requirements
No stock - although it may have a stabilizing brace designed to rest against or around your forearm to enable more accurate shooting
No vertical forehand grip
Must be capable of one-handed operation (no matter how awkward or impractical)
The practical result is a pistol ideal for home defense - the caliber can be varied to best match your specific application​.

Instruction and Supply for TOTAL Do-It-Yourself Gun Build
Really make it Yours
If you love guns, you've probably thought how neat it would be to build your own gun from the ground up - without any serial number or any other sort of registration.
Well the great news is that you can and it's totally legal (at least for now).
In an AR platform gun, the registered portion of the firearm is the lower receiver, which holds the fire control group (trigger assembly), the bolt catch, the magazine release, and the buffer tube assembly.

You can buy the lower receiver in what is called 80% condition. This does not have the pocket to hold the fire control group. Since in that configuration it cannot fire a round, it is NOT part of a weapon. It does not require any serial number or other form of federal firearms registration.

With the correct tools and jig fixture, almost anyone can do the machining to turn the 80% lower receiver into a fully functional part. It typically requires about 2 - 3 hours to complete.
